Petition

Supplementary schools provide additional learning opportunities for upward of 2000 children and young people every week. They contribute to the well-being of our communities and to the achievement of BME children and young people in education. Much voluntary effort from parents, children and young people, management committees and teachers ensures that the supplementary schools meet at weekends or after school. In order to sustain this commitment we need funding at the level of £100 per student a year. This is a modest amount and represents excellent value for money. However, we are facing budget cuts, leading to a crisis for our supplementary schools.
We urge you to support our work by working with us to identify additional funding.

Background information

2000 plus young people attend schools that run after school and at the weekends.
They are volunteer learners doing extra Maths, English, Science or their mother tongue and culture. The importance of this is many layered. Research shows that learners entering into learning voluntarily do better at school. The communities that care for their young people like this work together on community cohesion and good citizenship. The supplementary schools support parents and reduce the pressure on welfare and health services. Above all they help raise achievement and aspirations. Finally our county needs linguists to provide a skilled and diverse workforce.
